DLGSCI – Sport & Recreation recently sought feedback on their ‘Common Ground’ discussion paper which was released in October 2018. The paper outlines the progress this year on a review of the Department’s programs and financial resourcing. The review is to consider how those can be better prioritised to provide sport and recreation with the greatest value and get more people out and about and staying healthy and connected.
Activities such as recreational walking and bushwalking are very popular and make a greater overall contribution than sports activities in keeping people active. Yet funding and other support for outdoors recreation – apart from mountain biking – has been minimal relative to the support given to sports organisations over many years.
HikeWest’s recent submission to the department offers suggestions on how the Department could support the recreation sector more broadly, equally, and proactively. The submission also lists several ways the department could encourage voluntary recreational organisations to become more effective in getting and keeping more people active.
