A voice also for trail running

The HikeWest constitution is to be broadened to include trail running. This follows the unanimous support of members at the HikeWest 2024 Annual General Meeting.

Following the lodging of the updated constitution with the authorities, trail running organisations and clubs whose primary focus includes trail running will be able to apply to be members of HikeWest.

The HikeWest Executive Officer and Board have been most grateful for the enthusiastic support of our existing member bushwalking clubs, representatives of the trail running community, and DLGSC Sport and Recreation for this significant expansion of HikeWest’s role.

In view of the many similarities in the needs of bushwalkers and trail runners, HikeWest looks forward to representing and supporting the interests of both bushwalking and trail running in WA in at least the following ways:

  • HikeWest advocacy: The advocacy needs of bushwalkers and trail runners have much in common e.g. the great need for more trails and better access to trails. HikeWest has a strong history of effective advocacy on issues relevant to both. Our voice will be strengthened by representing the interests of both bushwalkers and trail runners, with the promise of better outcomes for both activities.
  • Increased membership: The inclusion of trail running and an anticipated increase in memberships will strengthen HikeWest’s access to funding and enable increased support for both bushwalking and trail running in WA.
  • Events partnering: Established large trail running events can include bushwalking activities, thus creating another pathway for bushwalking participation and increasing opportunities to promote and market both bushwalking and trail running. HikeWest has already partnered on such an event with Transcend Trails in the Avon Valley in 2024 which highlighted the synergies between trail running and hiking and the new opportunities to engage with a more diverse range of outdoor enthusiasts.
  • HikeWest reach: Cross-promotion between commercial trail running organisations and HikeWest will substantially increase HikeWest visibility and reach, which will further strengthen our advocacy work.
