As the weather starts to cool down, it’s the perfect time to explore Perth’s natural beauty on foot. With rivers, lakes, hills and forests, there are wonderful places to stroll, hike or run in Perth during autumn. HikeWest’s walks coordinator Vanessa Moss shares some of her favourite places to walk at this time of year.

Lakeside escapes
Scattered across Perth are tranquil lakes that offer a peaceful retreat into nature. Bibra Lake, Herdsman Lake, and Lake Joondalup are always popular, but don’t overlook Lake Leschenaultia. These lakeside trails are ideal for families and runners alike, and accessible for people with mobility considerations. In the early morning, you can enjoy the gentle soundtrack of birdsong and might be lucky enough to have a surprise visit from local wildlife.
Riverside walks
Perth’s Swan and Canning Rivers boast some of the city’s most scenic walking trails. Wander through the paperbarks at Canning River Regional Park, or enjoy the quiet along the peaceful banks of the Swan River at Garvey Park.
For an adventure beyond the city, head to the Avon Valley. Enjoy a picturesque walk on the Avon River walk trail, for a more challenging experience, try the Echidna Trail.
The historic towns of Toodyay, York and Northam also offer heritage walk trails.
Up in the hills
For those seeking a more rugged adventure, the Perth Hills are perfect. Bungadore Park (Wugong Regional Park) in Bedfordale is great for shorter walks, while Victoria Dam rewards hikers with stunning views. Autumn is also a great time to walk Eagle View or the shorter Little Eagle View. And of course, the iconic Bibbulmun Track is perfect for a peaceful stroll among the trees, a full-day hike or a multi-day adventure.
