Community Hiking Program

Free walks for multicultural communities

Join us for a relaxing walk in nature with a guide.
Explore the forests and parks of Perth, and learn about Australian wildlife and plants.

Why join our free nature walks?

  • Explore nature: Listen to the birds; look for wildflowers; get to know the Australian bush.
  • Improve your health: Walking in nature is good for you. It improves fitness, wellbeing and sleep quality.
  • Fun with friends: Bring your friends and family along to enjoy some fun in nature.

About the project

HikeWest’s Community Hiking Project encourages newly arrived migrants, refugees and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to walk in nature (bushwalking).

The program offers beginner bushwalking activities in the parks and forests close to Perth, and in the Perth Hills. Participants are supported to walk safely and responsibly, learn about the Australian bush, and connect with others who enjoy the outdoors.

Many students from North Metropolitan TAFE’s Adult Migrant English Program have taken part in the Community Hiking Program. They have embraced bushwalking, exploring a variety of locations in the Perth Hills.

Many of the students have also mentioned that since arriving in Australia they had never previously been bushwalking nor visited our forests that are so close to Perth.

HikeWest is grateful to the staff at North Metro TAFE for their support and collaboration on this new program and also to the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries for making the project possible through an Outdoors Active Recreation Grant.
